ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine University women's basketball team posted a convincing win against Calvin (Mich.) University, 69-35, in a non-conference game at the MTI Center in Angola, Ind.
Calvin (0-2) connected on the game's first points with a triple two-and-a-half minutes in to the first quarter. But Trine (4-0) then scored seven unanswered points as part of a larger, 12-5, run to end the frame to lead by four points after the first 10 minutes, 12-8. Junior Kayla Wildman (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) scored four of her game-high 12 points during the run.
In the second half, the Knights were held to just three points with all points coming at the free-throw line as Calvin went 0-for-14 from the field. Trine took advantage with a 20-point period that began with a 16-1 run to go up by 19 points, 28-9, with just over three minutes to go in the half. Calvin scored its final points of the half at the 2:35 mark, but the Thunder then ended the half with back-to-back layups by sophomores Sam Underhill (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) and Alexa Porter (Goshen, Ind./Concord) to increase the Trine lead to 21 points, 32-11, at the break.
The third quarter began with a layup by sophomore Makayla Ardis (Lake City, Mich./Lake City) and began a 12-6 scoring advantage in the first six-and-a-half minutes that padded the lead to 27 points, 44-17, with 3:41 left in the period. The Knights ended the quarter by outscoring Trine, 7-3, but would still trail by a score of 47-24 going into the final period.
Trine doubled-up on Calvin in the scoring column for the final 10 minutes and recorded its largest lead of the game of 39 points, 69-30, as part of a 9-0 scoring streak that was capped by a three-pointer by junior Natalee Kunse (Clare, Mich./Clare) with 2:33 to go. Calvin netted the final points of the contest on a layup and then a three-pointer, but the home team already had the win secured and went on to post the 69-35 final.
Wildman's 12 points led all players on four-of-eight shooting (50.0 percent) and also added four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior Tara Bieniewicz (Chesterfield, Mich./Dakota) was the next leading scorer with eight points and also had a team-high five rebounds.
Trine is scheduled to host Adrian (Mich.) College on Saturday (Jan. 30) at the MTI Center. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
