PURDUE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Late Fourth Quarter Run Holds Purdue in Loss at Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Despite a trio of players in double figures, the Purdue women's basketball team could not hold off a late charge by Iowa in the fourth quarter Monday afternoon, falling 87-81 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.


Madison Layden dropped a career-high 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting, all triples, matching the freshman record for 3-pointers in a game. The rookie dished out four assists, grabbed three rebounds and notched a pair of steals.


Fatou Diagne posted her first double-double of the year with a career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kayana Traylor popped back into double figures with a 14-point outing, including a pair of 3-pointers.


The Boilermakers (5-6, 2-5) shot 45% on the afternoon and converted 10-of-24 3-point attempts. Purdue converted 16 Iowa (9-3, 5-3) turnovers into 18 points and tallied 16 second chance points off 16 offensive rebounds.


Purdue shot 45% in the first half and built up a six-point lead at 21-15 in the second quarter. The Boilermakers kept pace with five 3-pointers, but an 11-2 Hawkeye run in the second gave the hosts a 44-39 lead at the break.


Diagne dominated the low block for 10 points over the opening 20 minutes. Layden gave the Boilermakers an early spark with a trio of triples in the first half, while Brook Moore chipped in all nine of her points off the bench.


Layden's hot touch continued into the third, knocking down a triple on back-to-back-to-back trips down the floor. Iowa grew its leads to as many as eight in the frame, but a Karissa McLaughlin 3-point buzzer beater pull the Boilermakers within two heading into the fourth at 63-61.


After tying the game at the line, Kayana Traylor nailed a stepback triple to open 3-point lead for the Boilermakers with 8:21 to play. Diagne and McLaughlin combined for Purdue's next three baskets to open a six-point advantage halfway through the fourth.


The Boilermakers fell on the wrong side of 13-0 run that saw the Hawkeyes pull away late.

• Purdue leads the all-time series 40-34.

• Layden joins Karissa McLaughlin, Nicole Erickson, Britany Rayburn and Courtney Moses for the single-game record.

• Diagne's double-double was her first since the final game of the 2019-20 season against Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament.

• Purdue committed a season-low 10 turnovers.

• Karissa McLaughlin dished out seven assists, a season high.

• Diagne set a new career high with three steals.

• The Boilermakers knocked down at least 10 3-pointers for the third time this season..

• Traylor recorded her ninth game in double figures this season, setting a new career high.

• Purdue lost the rebounding battle 38-32, being outrebounded for just the second time this season.


UP NEXT

The Boilermakers will return to Mackey Arena on Thursday afternoon to face Wisconsin for the lone matchup with Badgers this season.
