FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IUPUI women's track and field team showcased some young talent on Saturday (Jan. 23) as the Jaguars finally opened the indoor season at the Mastodon Invitational inside Lutheran Health Fieldhouse on the Purdue Fort Wayne campus. The meet consisted exclusively of Horizon League schools and was held at the site of the upcoming Horizon League Indoor Championships.
Freshman Sabrina Robison collected a win in the pole vault in her collegiate debut while classmate Hannah Sale earned a runner-up finish in the mile.
Robison was clean on her first three attempts and needed a second jump to clear 3.55m (11' 7 3/4''). Having already won the event, Robison attempted 3.70m, which would have set a new school record, but was unable to clear the bar.
"It was awesome," Robison said. "I did better than I expected after not being able to pole vault for a couple of months."
On the track, Sale took the lead in the mile with two laps remaining, but succumbed to Oakland's Ashley Quinn on her way to a 5:22.90 finish. Fellow freshman Madison Fry was third at 5:23.36 and Ashton Chase clocked a time of 5:31.62.
The Jaguars also had some known commodities start off the season with strong showings.
Amani Miles had an incredibly busy day, finishing second in the 60m dash (7.95) and 200m dash (27.01) and third in the 400m (1:02.19). Miles (8.08) and Makayla Clampitt (8.28) won their preliminary heats of the 60m event and were joined in the finals by Lauren Palmer (8.35). All three were even faster in the finals, headed by Miles' effort.
Miles just missed a win in the 200 at 27.01 while Clampitt was seventh at 28.02 and Marie Terry ran a time of 28.08.
Junior Sabrina Elder was runner-up in the 800m event (2:17.19) and freshman Sophie Reichard was fourth in the 3,000m race. Reichard crossed in a time of 10:26.73 and led a parade of IUPUI rookies as Makenna Sunbury was fifth at 10:30.44 and Ellie Cates was fifth at 10:31.71.
Junior Kelly Zehnder, who was fourth in the pole vault earlier in the day, placed third in the triple jump (10.43m / 34' 2.75''). Mikayla Miller also had a busy day, placing fourth in the high jump at 1.52m (4' 11.75''), while also competing in the long jump and shot put.
The Jaguars 4x400 relay team of Miles, Kayla Wolnik, Terry and Elder earned a second-place finish in a time of 4:18.12.
IUPUI will return to action on Feb. 13 when the Jaguars participate in the Indiana Tech Classic in Fort Wayne.
