INDIANA FEVER BASKETBALL: Kelsey & Tiffany Mitchell Invited to USA Basketball Women’s National Team

(FEVER RELEASE)

The last time the USA Basketball Women’s National Team gathered together, it was in February of 2020 for training camp.

On Monday, USA Basketball announced that the team will once again return to the basketball court in a four-day minicamp next month at the University of South Carolina.

A total of 19 athletes will participate including Indiana Fever’s Kelsey Mitchell and Tiffany Mitchell. They will be joined by some of the top players in the WNBA including Jewell Loyd, Nneka Ogwumike, Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson and Arike Ogunbowale.

“It’s been a year since we’ve been together for a training camp, and I’m excited to step back on the court with the USA National Team,” said USA and South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley. “We’ve got a great mix of veteran leadership and younger players, most of whom know how I run practices, and I anticipate we’ll have four extremely competitive days of practice here in South Carolina. We’re missing a few pieces of the puzzle, we have 36 players in our pool, but it will be incredibly helpful in our preparations for the Olympics in Tokyo this summer.”

The four-day minicamp will take place Feb. 4-7, where the U.S. squad will train each day beginning at 10 a.m. EST. South Carolina assistant coach Lisa Boyer and Dallas Wings head coach Vickie Johnson will serve as court coaches during the four-day camp.

Comprehensive COVID-19 protocols will also be utilized, including mandatory and regular COVID-19 PCR testing administered to participating athletes, coaches, officials and staff in accordance with FIBA and USA Basketball recommendations and CDC guidelines.

For both Mitchells, this minicamp is familiar territory having been invited before. However, entering minicamp both are coming off great individual seasons in the wubble. As the league’s sixth leading scorer averaging 17.9 points per game during the 2020 season, Kelsey Mitchell was the offensive catalyst for the Fever in her third season. While Tiffany rounded out her fifth WNBA season with career high averages in points (12.7), rebounds (3.4), assists (2.6) and minutes played (26.4).
