HCAC 2021 Women’s Basketball Notebook, Week 2

CARMEL, Ind. – The 2021 women's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) basketball season saw week two of play. Athlete of the Week: Brianna Gillig (New Riegel, Ohio) Bluffton University | Forward | Junior - Gillig went for a game-high 28 points on 4-of-5 shooting from distance in Bluffton's 80-67 win at Defiance on Friday night. She netted 18.5 PPG over the weekend in the Bluffton sweep. Gillig also pulled down seven rebounds per game against the Jackets. Notable Performances:

  • Destinee Cross (West Lafayette, Ind.) Franklin College | Forward | Junior – Cross topped the Grizzlies and matched a career-high with 20 points in Thursday night's win over Rose-Hulman. She went 8-for-9 from the field and 1-for-2 from three-point range while pulling down a team-high six rebounds and handing out two assists.

  • Savannah Courtney (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) Hanover College | Forward | Senior - Courtney helped propel Hanover to a perfect week as they swept Manchester. The senior shot an impressive 12-of-15 from the free-throw line, Including 7-of-8 in the teams game one victory.

  • Tiara Jackson (East Chicago, Ind.) Manchester University | Forward | First-Year - Jackson continues to rebound at the highest rate in the HCAC. Jackson grabbed 13 boards while scoring six points in MU's matchup with Hanover on Thursday afternoon. On Saturday, Jackson posted her third double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Through seven games played this school year, Jackson has 80 total rebounds, good for an 11.4 per game average.

  • Maddie Kellione (Cythiana, Ky.) Transylvania University | Guard | Sophomore - The sophomore guard scored a career-high 24 points in Saturday's come-from-behind win at Anderson in a 65-60 Pioneer victory and led Transylvania to a 2-0 week with a pair of double-digit scoring performances. Kellione scored 17 of her 24 points in the second half of Saturday's comeback victory in which the Pioneers erased an 11-point second half deficit. Kellione hit on a career high 11-of-13 free throws for the afternoon. Kellione scored 10 points in a clutch fourth quarter during which the Pioneers overtook the Ravens for good. Kellione's Saturday tally totaled 24 points, five rebounds, three assists, one block and 6-for-12 shooting from the floor. Kellione led the Pioneers with five assists and three steals in Thursday's 64-46 conference-opening win over Anderson and hit 5-for-10 field goals and 2-for-3 from downtown for 12 points. For the week Kellione totaled 36 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, three steals, one block, and 50 percent shooting from the field.
