RICHMOND, Indiana – Earlham College men's basketball stayed right with visiting Transylvania University up-and-down the court for 40 minutes, but the Quakers were ultimately defeated at the free-throw line in a 75-68 loss to the Pioneers on Sunday afternoon at the Druley Performance Gym.
Earlham (1-5) was whistled for 25 fouls, second-most in a game this season, which Transy converted into a 17-of-25 ledger at the free-throw line. Transy had 16 fouls, resulting in a 10-of-11 mark at the charity stripe for Earlham, however the Quakers did not have a single free-throw attempt in the second half.
Tommy Makabu led Earlham with 26 points, while Jamel Barnes Jr. finished with 17 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Makabu, Barnes, and AJ White each dished out four assists.
Transylvania controlled the boards for much of the game and finished the contest with 43 to 21 rebounding advantage. Twelve of the Pioneers' rebounds were on the offensive glass, yielding 16 second-chance points.
Lucas Gentry led Transy with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while Zach Larimore chipped in with 24 points.
Earlham held a 54-50 lead as late as the 11:03 mark of the second half, following a layup from Zachariah Andre. The game was deadlocked at 68-68 with 1:21 showing on the clock, but a Gentry layup with just under a minute to play gave the Pioneers the lead. Larimore hit the second of two free throws just seconds, later, and his layup with under 10 seconds on the clock clinched the win for Transy.
Earlham men's basketball is back in action this Friday, Feb. 5, when it hosts Hanover College at the Druley Performance Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
