The most recent 14 match-ups have come as conference foes since Butler joined the BIG EAST prior to the 2013-14 season. (Butler is 9-5 in those 14 meetings.) The series stretches back to 1922. Among its current BIG EAST counterparts, Butler has only played Xavier more than the 43 games it has played against Marquette. The teams split the season series in 2019-20 with each team winning on its home court. Butler Leads, 23-20 Streak: Marquette, W1 At Marquette: Marquette Leads, 13-10 LaVall Jordan (at BU) vs. Marquette: 3-3 First Meeting: Marquette, 18-17; 12/16/22 (at MU) Last Meeting: Marquette, 76-57; 2/9/20 (at MU) STRONG ADDITION: Bo Hodges had an appeal of a waiver for immediate eligibility approved by the NCAA prior to the Bulldogs’ Jan. 30 game with Xavier. In his first action, Hodges came off the bench for 11 points and six rebounds. The transfer from East Tennessee State scored more than 1,000 points in his three seasons there and was a finalist for the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award by CollegeInsider.com. He earned 2019-20 First-team All-Southern Conference selection by the league’s head coaches, leading ETSU to a school-record 30 wins (30-4) and SoCon regular season and tournament championships. ON THE MEND: Senior forward Christian David returned to game action Jan. 30 vs. Xavier, playing limited minutes. David had been rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered Jan. 21, 2020 at Villanova. ‘BOARD’ OUT OF HIS MIND: Redshirt senior Bryce Nze has climbed to second in the BIG EAST in rebounding at 8.4 caroms per game. He has pulled down 57 total rebounds over his last five games. Nze pulled down 14 rebounds Jan. 19 at DePaul, his second time in three outings hitting that mark (also at St. John’s Jan. 12). It is his highest total in a Butler uniform (although he had 17 in a game while playing at Milwaukee). HANDLE WITH CARE: Butler is third and the BIG EAST and 34th nationally, averaging only 11.1 turnovers per game. Butler had only six turnovers against Xavier Saturday, the team’s sixth single-digit turnover output of the season through 14 games. The six turnovers matched the team’s season-low. The Bulldogs turned the ball over only seven times in 45 minutes of play in the Jan. 16 win over Creighton. Butler has committed 10 or fewer turnovers in 53 of the 113 games that LaVall Jordan has been head coach at Butler. BIG NIGHT FOR THE BIG MAN: Junior Bryce Golden posted a career-high 19 points Jan. 26 at UConn. That included five three-pointers. It was his first time this season leading the Bulldogs in scoring, as he became the seventh different Bulldog to pace the team. PERSONNEL UPDATES: On Jan. 26, Butler announced that JaKobe Coles will require season-ending surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee. Coles injured the knee in practice on New Year’s Day. Butler’s medical staff put in place a timeline to see if the injury would progress at a rate that surgery would not be required. After a follow-up evaluation Jan. 25, it was determined that surgery would be required. Markeese Hastings, who has been on an indefinite leave of absence since Jan. 16 for personal reasons, has decided to opt-out of the remainder of the 2020-21 season (COVID-19 concerns).
